Key Sales Tax Trend: Accelerating Local Activity
Local sales tax activity accelerated materially in the first half of 2026. According to Vertex, 463 combined sales tax rate changes and new rates were implemented from January 1 through June 30, 2026, up from 408 during the same period in 2025.
The significance of the trend is not simply that sales tax rates are rising. The pace and geographic fragmentation of local changes are increasing the frequency with which businesses need to update tax calculations, exemption logic, registrations, and compliance processes.
The move from 408 to 463 first-half changes indicates that sales tax volatility is increasingly a local phenomenon. For businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions, the growing number of city, county, and district changes makes continuous monitoring of local rates and rules increasingly important.
